ARTIST BIO

Samuele Tomasulo

Samuele Tomasulo is an Italian American artist who was raised in Switzerland. His career as a working artist began in 2016 when he was recruited by an independent art agency to exhibit his paintings in a solo exhibition in Melbourne, Australia. Tomasulo has synaesthesia, where each scent, sound, touch, taste, and vision has a layer of colors attached to it. He paints these sensual experiences in vibrant explosions he calls partgkoons, named after a language from his childhood imagination. His vast background in varying social and cultural environments around the world motivates him to create change with his work. Tomasulo is interested in connecting people and fighting for a more universal understanding of fundamental human rights. He is interested in using his art to expand a collective knowledge of emotional integrity. He collects information by interviewing hundreds of people around the world and using overlapping thoughts as a script to present to people in small intimate spaces. Tomasulo uses sound sculptures to create emotional immersion. This allows the audience to interpret the sound in their own voice and feel the pain, love, fear, and excitement of humanity.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Emotional intelligence is the assertive capacity and awareness to control one’s emotions and respond empathically. Fear, love, excitement, and pain all impact and control our lives. Eating burritos makes me feel happy, so I will eat a burrito for dinner. Sex excites me, so I will have sex. My heart was broken, so I will not be vulnerable. As an artist, I experiment with emotions to help understand others. I hope to expand our collective emotional intelligence. By creating sound sculptures that pull my audience into the mind of a specific character. Bringing light to the trauma of growing up in a world that trains a group of people to believe that they are degenerate. Giving a voice to those silenced by society, especially the LGBTQI+ community. I hope to find my art somewhere in the middle of emotions screaming to be heard and someone genuinely listening. My art forces its viewers to be invested in each other and our shared humanity. Art is a language of emotions, and I use it as a catalyst to forge an emotionally and physically safe future.

3RD YEAR SHOWCASE

August 29, 2019

This piece is titled Empathic Deniability. It is a social experiment in emotional intelligence. There are two structures, one voiced with external dialogue and the other voiced with internal dialogue. The external depicted actual things said to people living with HIV. The internal expressed the reaction to those seemingly painless phrases. To gather this information, I interviewed over two hundred people living with HIV from all over the world. The sound is housed in two triangular structures large enough to fit one person comfortably in each. The structures are lined with painted mirrors, with my signature paintings. I paint how I experience my synesthesia and the paintings connected to each structure represent my sensory reactions to each interview.

THE REALM OF POSSIBILITIES

December 6, 2018

I was honored to be a part of the Rainbow House's first events of many. At this event we showcased all of my art over three years representing my journey in a way that even I have not fully seen before. I will be the first to admit that my work seems to be a bit redundant to the naked eye, but what I am painting represents a different spirit or emotion each time and can never be fully reproduced, and at this event you could clearly see the difference of each different mark. It was really beautiful if I do say so myself.

THE FIFTY FOOTER

January 17, 2015

The Fifty Footer is the largest painting I have done to date. I was inspired by the relationship between my childhood imagination and my adult reality. I wanted to create a moment where my audience would be able to experience my imagination.
